Carla's our own little marketing guru and PR princess. This year she's set herself the challenge of completing the one mile Great London Swim to raise money for the Child Bereavement Charity. When she's not shouting about Fun Swim Shop, you'll find her looking after and having fun with daugher Cerys and of course, in the pool training!

Training is starting to pay off

The long cold Winter has been incredibly difficult for me to manage. It takes iron will to go and change into a costume and plunge into chilly water at the local pool.

I’m also not a big fan of driving in the dark but that’s the only time I have free to do any training.

However, I must be doing something right because for the first time in my life the lycra in my swimming costume disintegrated and I had to buy a new one!

Anyway, I have continued to go swimming instead of watching from the balcony while my daughter has her lesson. I feel as if very little effort has brought amazing results. Unfortunately I can’t yet report being able to swim two consecutive lengths, but my recovery time between each length is improving.

In the past I would never have dared to go in the lanes they rope off for ‘proper’ swimmers for fear for annoying people and getting in their way. I’m pleased to report that I’m now an accepted occasional visitor to the lane during my swimming practice. The other swimmers recognise me now and we’ve chatted about my challenge. They know I can do a length without stopping and if they’re swimming behind me they know to go past me when I get to the wall and catch my breath. It certainly helps not to have to swim round kids and babies having fun in the general public section.

Up until now I have been breathing every second stroke while my fitness improves, but on my last visit to the pool I felt confident enough to start experimenting with bi-lateral breathing. I have a Speedo Universal Kickboard with hand holes which I find very comfortable to use. Up until now I have used it during practice to give my legs an idea of what it feels like to swim without stopping.  Next week I will put my face in and practice breathing and legs at the same time.

All in all I think I’m making good progress towards my target of swimming a mile in July. The nights are lighter and I’ve found a babysitter, so there should be a vast improvement when I next report in.
