The UK's best dirty weekend!
Every August bank holiday, hundreds of hardy competitors and their muddy buddies from all over the world descend on Llanwrtyd Wells in Powys, mid Wales for this fun-tastic display of British eccentricity.
Armed with their sense of humour as well as the essential mask, snorkel and flippers, competitors must complete two consecutive lengths of a 60 yard bog trench using flipper power alone.
Jonathon Madden, FunSwimShop Director said “We caught the Bog snorkelling bug after supplying the equipment for the Big Brother Bog Snorkelling task in 2009. It seemed a natural progression to become the 2010 sponsor, this event is Seriously Fun!” |

FunSwimShop World Bog Snorkelling 2010
Smashed World Records, Record number of entries, worldwide press and massive crowds!
Moving the World Bog Snorkelling to Bank Holiday Sunday seems to have encouraged even more eccentricity to the UKs Smallest Town, Llanwrtyd Wells to join in the mud splashing mayhem of this unique world event.
With entries 163 participants, it is the biggest number since the event began and this year, with a little less rain and a little more sunshine than usual, a large crowd of excited spectators lined the peat bog trenches to enjoy the spectacle and cheer on the snorkellers.
Early on in the day the world record previously held by Joanna Pitchforth (1.38.15), was smashed firstly by local man Dan Morgan of Brecon in an astounding 1:30.66 and also by John Toomey all the way from Australia (1:30.97). Last years Junior Winner, Becky Lord, smashed her time of 1:41:56 by finishing in 1:38:01.
Infamous Bog Snorkeller, Julia Galvin from Eire has, over the years become Bog Snorkelling’s most treasured Mascot and was recently bestowed the title of ‘Dame’ by the Principality of Hutt River following her mention on Prince Leonard’s 85th birthday honours list.
International Press have covered the event with crews at the Waen Rhydd Bog from Spain, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Germany, France, England and Wales.
Organiser, Sheelagh Tompkins of Green Events told us “It was an amazing day. It’s so great to have such enthusiastic sponsors. Jonathon and Phil Madden of FunSwimShop have really been supportive and enjoyed getting down and dirty with the rest of us. It’s been an amazing turnout, some unbelievably fast entrants and really inventive costumes. The atmosphere has been brilliant.” |
